IWMM Portal retirement announcement

Starting September 30, 2025, apps that were created specifically for IWMM data management will no longer be available. While all data will continue to be secured, maintained, and available for download, the ability to add or analyze IWMM specific vegetation and management data will not be available. Bird Survey data can still be added and analyzed using existing AKN apps and tools, which have been noted in the details below.

All data management tools related to standard avian surveys such as point count, area search, secretive marshbird, etc, will continue to be available for all IWMM projects. The affected apps and specific functions are listed below, including replacements where available.

Unfortunately, we were unable to secure the funding needed to continue the maintenance and support required of these apps under our FedRAMP security certification. We’ve fought for years to keep these tools going, so it’s been difficult to come to this decision. We will continue strongly advocating for the support of these tools, and while we hope to meet our funding goals in the near future and reinstall these apps, we are currently focused on reserving our resources to maintain the existing data securely and in perpetuity.

Affected Apps and Specific Functions

IWMM Portal

Purpose

The main landing page for IWMM users. Also includes data downloads, reports, and project management functions.

Replacement

Available replacements are listed in subsequent sections, by function.

Data Download

There are some options to replace CSV output from the data download tool, listed by survey type in subsequent sections.

Bird Survey

Data can be downloaded using our new Project Downloader tool. Be sure to select all applicable survey types, including site conditions.

Caveats

  • Column names may be slightly different than original downloads

  • Site conditions come in a separate file rather than merged into a single file

Vegetation Survey

Data can be downloaded using our new Project Downloader tool. Be sure to select the "Vegetation observations" survey type option.

Management Actions

This data cannot currently be downloaded, but the feature will be added by spring 2026. In the meantime, please reach out to our support staff for a manual data output at support@pointbluehelp.zendesk.org (Subject: “Management Actions data request”)

Reports

Reports with output specific to the IWMM project will no longer be available. Users can still access our general avian reports and analytics from the “Analysts” app, here: https://data.pointblue.org/apps/analysts/

Manage Units

Sampling units can still be fully managed using our "Project Leaders" app, here: https://data.pointblue.org/apps/projectleaders/index.php?page=sampling-units

Assign Researchers

Researchers can still be added and fully managed, here: https://data.pointblue.org/apps/projectleaders/index.php?page=project-access

Set Sharing Levels

Sharing levels can still be fully managed, here: https://data.pointblue.org/science/projectleaders/

Bird Survey

Purpose

Enter avian survey data for activities such as point counts, area search, secretive marsh bird, and so on.

Bird surveys can still be fully managed using our "Biologists" app, here: https://data.pointblue.org/science/biologists/

Vegetation Survey

Purpose

Enter vegetation survey data.

Replacement

There are no replacements to manage this data. See options for downloading data under Data Download > Vegetation Survey

Management Actions

Purpose

Enter survey observations to understand impact of management actions.
